Wine Regions.

As I publish more and more detailed information and tasting notes from various wine regions around the world I will add them to this page based on region. Just click on the links to go more in-depth.

Mosel-Saar-Ruwer (Germany)

A great German wine region, much maligned over its generic Piesporter Michelsberg or Liebfraumilch, but capable of absolute greatness. When I recently visited the region and some of its producers, notably Dr Loosen in Bernkastel, I was pleasantly surprised. It really is a great region to visit, picturesque, wonderful hospitality and wine.

Our base was in Trier, Germany's oldest city. We stayed in the Nell's Park Hotel in the outskirts of Trier, but only a 15-minute walk from the city centre with it's Roman monuments, such as the Porta Nigra.

One of the most memorable wines of the trip has to be the 1997 Graacher Himmelreich Auslese from Joh Jos Prum. It was my first experience of this top quality producer's wine and it will certainly not be the last. The wine is from one of the great Mosel sites and although still quite young had started to develop a wonderful opulent, petrol nose. Now that could just put you off but it really is the most amazing experience when this hits the palate. Honeyed, peachy and oh so smooth. The bracing acidity gives it great balance and ensures it's not just cloying sweetness. It is velvet in a glass.

Rheingau (Germany)

A visit to the historic Schloss Johannisberg estate and tasting some of their 2004 wines at the Decanter Fine Wine Encounter.

Franken (Germany)

A visit to Berlin leads to a tasting of Franken wines from Max Müller I. See: meet the Winemaker

Veneto (Italy)

Italy's best Prosecco comes from the Valdobbiadene e Conegliano DOC. Some great examples can be found in the Bisol Prosecco article.

Another great producer in the Veneto, this time of still wines is Roberto Anselmi. See Two Italians for more information.

The winner of the Child's Play tasting is also in this region, although the geographical indication is the much larger area of Venezia IGT.

A Taste of North East Italy covers some real gems from the Veneto and Friuli.

Campania (Italy)

Another very interesting area is Campania, land of Naples, Pompeii, Vesuvius and the beautiful Amalfi Coast. Home to some pretty stunning wines too. Ever wondered what they drunk just before Vesuvius blew its cone? Here is the answer: Wine AD 79
